There are many simple practices we can adopt to help our fellowemployees feelvalued. For example, we can be respectful of theworkspaces of others. There are manyemployees who work in openspaces, meaning they do not work in offices with doors.Beingrespectful of their workspaces means, among other things, being cognizant of the reality thatloud conversations may interferewith their work. It’s a small gesture but it sends the messagethatthe university belongs to all of us as much as it belongs to any ofus.

Humanities Colloquium, Thursday (11/29), 11 AM, UC 203

    The Humanities Colloquium Series

    Presents

Humanism and the Dharma of War in the Mahabharata

    Dr. Robert Quist

  • Thursday, November 2911:00-11:50 AM

    University Center 203

The great Indian epic the Mahabharata is often compared toHomer’s Iliad, mostly because both epics take place during timesofwar. In addition, both epics touch on religion and the ethicalconcerns about killing others. Both epics also share ahumanismtheme that is absent from most ancient works of literature. The Mahabharata and Iliad contrast this humanism theme with warandone’s duty or dharma to fight and kill others. While the humanismtheme in Iliad is more commonly known, in theMahabharata it has notbeen researched as much (if at all). This colloquium will show howthe Mahabharata contains similarconflicts between war, duty, andhumanism.
