Vraylar (cariprazine) is an antipsychotic medication used to treat certain mental health conditions, such as bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and major depressive disorder. “Specifically, Vraylar is used to treat symptoms of bipolar disorder, such as mood swings and depressive episodes, as well as psychotic symptoms of schizophrenia,” says Sarah Jeffries, Mental Health First Aid trainer. Its active ingredient, cariprazine, works by rebalancing serotonin and dopamine levels to improve mood, behavior, and thinking.

Vraylar can be expensive, with a list price—the price charged to pharmacies—of $1,446.55 per 30-day supply as of January 2024. However, prices vary, especially if using health insurance. We’ll outline ways to save on Vraylar, including coupons, copay cards, and the Vraylar patient assistance program.

How much does Vraylar cost?

Vraylar is a capsule taken once per day, available in doses of 1–6 milligrams (mg). For a monthly supply of 30, 1.5 mg capsules, you can expect to spend around $1,910 when paying without insurance or coupons.

Does insurance cover Vraylar?

Vraylar is covered by some, but not all, insurance companies and plans. Your insurance company or pharmacist can help confirm how much a Vraylar copay will cost you.

“Since market demand also affects price, drugs supported by insurance may necessarily have higher list prices based on negotiations between pharma and insurance companies,” Jeffries adds.

Does Medicare cover Vraylar?

Medicare covers Vraylar, but Medicare Part D plans, those that cover prescription drugs, vary in what they cover and which coverage phase the beneficiary is in. Contact your Medicare prescription coverage provider to verify how much you’ll be expected to pay for Vraylar.

Those who qualify for a Medicare Low Income Subsidy (LIS) might be able to get a month’s supply of Vraylar for $11.20 or less through Medicare’s “Extra Help” program.

Does Medicaid cover Vraylar?

Yes, Medicaid covers Vraylar prescriptions. Although the cost varies by state, many Vraylar patients pay $4 or less when using Medicaid, according to Vraylar’s manufacturer, AbbVie.

Vraylar patient assistance and other ways to save

There are three ways to save on Vraylar, with or without insurance. We’ll outline the information you need to qualify and sign up.

VRAYPAY savings card

With VRAYPAY, also known as the Vraylar savings card, eligible commercially insured patients may pay as little as $0 for their first two 30-day fills and as little as $5 for 30- or 90-day refills.

Out-of-pocket costs can vary for VRAYPAY, and a maximum savings limit applies. This savings program isn’t available to those using Medicare, Medicaid, or other federal or state healthcare programs.

To apply for a VRAYPAY card, enter the following information on the sign-up page: your name, birthday, gender, zip code, and email address. Alternatively, you can text “VRAYLAR” to 2068 to get started. With this method, you can complete the eligibility questionnaire through automated texts and also sign up for refill reminders.

myAbbVie Assist

AbbVie also offers financial help through myAbbVie Assist, AbbVie’s overarching patient assistance program portal for medications that it manufactures. The program offers free prescription medications to eligible patients with limited or no health insurance coverage.

That said, if you do have insurance, it might still be worth applying. AbbVie can assess your eligibility based on your household income, insurance coverage, and your out-of-pocket medical expenses.

To qualify for myAbbVie Assist, you must live in the United States and meet its income criteria:

myAbbVie Assist income criteria

Household sizeAnnual income
1$87,480 or less
2$118,320 or less
3$149,160 or less
4*$180,000 or less

*After 4, add $28,320 for each additional dependent family member.

There are two ways to apply for myAbbVie Assist:

  1. Online: Patients can apply for financial support for qualifying medication treatments through AbbVie’s Patient Access Support portal. There, your eligibility for all AbbVie programs, including myAbbVie Assist, will be reviewed. If you don’t already have an AbbVie Patient Access Support account, you’ll need to register for one first.
  2. By fax or mail: Alternatively, you can complete a paper application form with your healthcare provider and return it to AbbVie. AbbVie will review the application within two days and update both you and your healthcare provider on your status for myAbbVie Assist savings. Call 800-222-6885 with any questions.

SingleCare prescription savings card

While a monthly supply of 1.5 mg Vraylar capsules could cost you upwards of $1,900 at retail price, you can get it for as low as $1,330 with a SingleCare Vraylar coupon. You can use a SingleCare discount whether you have insurance or not—you just can’t combine it with insurance to pay for your prescription.

In some cases, a SingleCare discount might give you a better price than out-of-pocket insurance coverage. Just have your pharmacy run the SingleCare Vraylar coupon to see how the costs compare before you decide.

Your SingleCare Vraylar savings card is free with no strings attached (no fees, copays, premiums, or expirations). All you need to qualify for it is a Vraylar prescription from your healthcare provider and citizenship in the United States or Puerto Rico. While people on Medicare or Medicaid can’t use VRAYPAY, they can use SingleCare. You just can’t combine SingleCare savings with commercial insurance, Medicare, or Medicaid.

To claim your savings, select your preferred pharmacy from the Vraylar coupon page. Your prescription savings card will be generated on the right side of the screen. From there, you can email or text the card to yourself. Prefer a hard copy? Click “Get physical card” or “Print” for a physical copy. You can also download the SingleCare iOS or Android app for easy access to savings.

Why is Vraylar so expensive?

Like many prescription drugs, Vraylar has a lot of possible reasons for its high price. Jeffries shares some possible factors for high prescription drug pricing:

  • Market demand
  • Patent protection
  • Marketing and distribution
  • Manufacturing and quality control
  • Research and development costs
  • Negotiations between pharma and insurance companies
  • Administrative expenses

Vraylar also doesn’t have a generic alternative yet, which can impact pricing while its pharmaceutical company tries to recoup manufacturing costs. When drugs get approved by the Food and Drug Administration after clinical research, the manufacturing company usually retains full rights to produce that drug for a certain amount of years, usually 15 to 20 years,” says Ndidi Ihim, Pharm.D., CEO of Abound Compounding Pharmacy & Wellness. “During this time, they try to recoup their investments and everything they have put into making the drug available. After that, other companies can make it generic and have it available to the public.”
