Why a joint bank account may be best for you?

A joint bank account is simply a type of account that gives equal access to two people, making both parties responsible for the account.

It’s much like having your own, the only difference is that you can both control what happens. This includes making payments, setting up Direct Debits and using any arranged overdraft.

Joint accounts are commonly used to manage shared household bills. This might be with a housemate or a partner. These accounts are useful for outgoings such as:

  • Mortgage
  • Rent
  • Groceries
  • Utility bills

When you have a joint current account you’ll both get a contactless debit card. You can also manage your joint account using the mobile banking app or via Online Banking.

Common questions about joint bank accounts

Who owns the money in a joint bank account?

The two named parties equally own the money in a joint bank account. This is true regardless of who deposited funds into the account. So, either account holder can withdraw money from, and deposit money into, the account at any time.

What happens if joint account holders become separated?

If account holders become separated, it’s possible to cancel the joint account mandate.

If you wish to close the joint account, both parties need to agree. Regular payments and any account debts will need to be settled before closure.

What happens if a joint account holder passes away?

If one joint account holder passes away, we can change the joint account to a sole account. Speak with your nearest branch or write to us if you need help making changes to your joint account.

Can you have a joint account if you’re not married?

Yes, you can open a joint account with anyone you want to share money management with. It doesn’t have to be someone you’re married to. Many people choose to have a joint account with a flatmate, partner or friend.

How do we close a joint account?

If, for any reason, you and your partner want to close your joint account, you’ll both need to be in agreement. Before we can close your account, you’ll also need to ensure that any regular payments due to be made are paid, and that any debts on the account are settled.

To close your joint account, simply pop into a NatWest branch or write to us and we’ll help you get the process underway.

Do packaged joint bank accounts cost the same as packaged sole bank accounts?

Yes they do. The fee you pay for one of our packaged accounts is only dependent on which account you choose and not the number of people who have access to the account.
