>> this is ktvu fox two news at noon. >> good afternoon, and thank you for joining us. i'm andre senior, more than 150 people gathered outside the san francisco jail this morning. they were rallying to support people facing charges for a protest on the golden gate bridge back in april. ktvu sally rasmus joins us live there to explain the action in response to those charges. ali. >> well, those protesters face a wide range of charges from felony conspiracy to false imprisonment to trespassing and this morning, some of them turned themselves in. when there was drumming, chanting and plenty of signs and flags outside the san francisco county jail this morning, all the activity outside in stark contrast to the quiet proceedings in the jail lobby, as some of the people charged with the protest that shut down the golden gate bridge in april turned themselves in. >> they are being, quote, cited and released, but that requires them to sit in jail for 10 to 12 hours. these are all people with with no criminal record that could just be or could be just,

you know, there's no requirement that it had to go like this. >> on april 15th, a group of people protesting the war in gaza and us military support for israel drove on to the golden gate bridge and chained themselves to their vehicles. the chp estimates 20,000 drivers in both directions were trapped for about five hours in the charging documents. the da's office lists those drivers as victims at least one driver missed surgery to remove a brain tumor. another driver ran out of water for her baby's infant formula. in a statement, the da's office said, quote, they were held against their will at the mercy of the 26 people involved in this event. end quote. rally organizers, meanwhile, called the da's charges inflated and demanded they be dropped. >> road blockages, inconvenience, mass public demonstrations have been used throughout us history by the civil rights movement, by martin luther king jr, by people fighting against the vietnam war, who wanted to end south african apartheid. all noble

potty on ncy pelosi drive, e festival when firefighterside brin. the man was lying on investigators still trying to determine the causef ath, but early investigations showed no signs of foul play, and police say his death does not appear to be related to outside lands. well, today, lawmakers in sacramento discussed the ongoing effort to educate california students on the dangers of opioids. san francisco assemblyman matt haney hosted the meeting of the state assembly select committee on fentanyl, opioid addiction and overdose prevention state. numbers show fentanyl is responsible for 80% of all drug related deaths among young people in california, superintendent of public instruction tony thurmond spoke about what's being done currently in california classrooms to bring down those numbers.

>> people sometimes think, well, we don't need this in our school. i've heard people say, we don't need narcan in our school. and i tell them we have to have an honest conversation about drug use. it is everywhere. it is not unique to any one zip code. any one group of people, and many times, even in more affluent communities, there's more money, there's more access to get access to drugs. >> thurmond says california saw 82 fentanyl deaths in 2012. in just over a decade, that number soared to roughly 6000 deaths in 2023. uc regents are considering a plan to help students who are battling drug and alcohol addiction by putting recovery centers on every campus. right now, they're small drug recovery programs at half of the uc campuses, including berkeley, the university of california student association is mounting a campaign to bring funding and a larger scale program to all ten campuses. it would include full time coordinators and private, dedicated meeting spaces. uc estimates the existing programs served about 4000 students just last year. a

south bay lawmaker plans to release details on a plan to protect farm workers from extreme heat. san jose state senator dave cortesi is partnering with the united farm workers to make sure agricultural employees are complying and employers are complying with existing heat prevention, injury and illness laws. cortez plans to hold a press conference this afternoon in sacramento with the so-called yolo six, a group of farm workers who were fired from their jobs in retaliation for standing up for their health and safety during a recent heat wav. all right, turning now to our forecast. meteorologist rosemary oroczo is here with us this noon to talk a little bit about the weather and rosemary. cooler temperatures on the rise when compared to some days last week, at least. >> yes, andre and breezy as well. a slow clearing day for some across the bay area. we are still with mostly cloudy skies along the coastline. partly cloudy as we get into the bay, and a beautiful view here at some cloud cover as well as some fog. the transition to the cooler pattern began yesterday and we'll continue as we get

improve transfers and service across the bay area, and bart is not the only transit agency making changes here. most agencies are making changes to their schedules to improve transfers between systems and or to accommodate students returning to school, including marin transit, golden gate transit, the smart train, and ac transit. well, this week, bart is installing the second set of those new generation fare gates to prevent fare evasion on the concourse level of civic center station. the new installation comes after bart successfully installed bigger and sturdier gates at the stations seventh street entrance. last month. bart says the installation is expected to take about two weeks to complete. bart also says all stations will have new fare gates by the end of next year. a new program in santa clara county guaras terans free taxi rides to important appointments. the free ride program allows vets to get taxis from yellow cab of silicon valley to travel to medical appointments, job interviews, educational activities and other essential appointments. vets can

uc san diego health, a number of people who fell has increased since 2019. that's the year the fence was installed. the trauma center uc san diego health says it treated 440 patients last year, and that is up from 42 patients in 2019. in march, a guatemalan woman became stranded atop the 30 foot border fence at the otay mesa crossing in southern california and fell to her death. uber is trying to fend off a series of lawsuits accusing its drivers of sexual assault. the san francisco based ride company is working to put a controversial measure on the nevada state ballot. this initiative would limit the amount of legal fees that plaintiffs attorneys could collect. in some cases, it would be more cost effective for lawyers not to pursue a case. the new york times reports. uber

transparency about the costs of classes and the materials needed. teachers are also required to have lessons on climate change, as well. a new law, california law, in fact, that went into effect this year, adds elementary schools to the public. schools that must offer a free and adequate supply of menstruation products. public schools across the state are now required to provide those products to younger students in the third, fourth and fifth grades. it comes in response to a recent cdc study, in fact, that found that roughly 10% of menstruation periods begin by the age of ten, and the new state law will require california state university campuses and community colleges to disclose up front the estimated cost of course materials. the law also asking university of california campuses to do the same, but does not make it a requirement. the schools have until 2028 to provide this information for at least 75% of their courses. it intended to promote, or it's intended to promote price transparency for students, and many of whom will spend more

disturbing new report says male cancer cases worldwide are on track to reach 19 million by 2050. australian health experts say that's an 84% increase from the 10.3 million in 2022, the report also found the number of men who die from cancer expected to rise 93% from 5.4 million in 2022 to 10.5 million in 2050. they also noted the higher cancer rates and deaths are due to men's tendency to smoke and drink more than women, a higher risk of carcinogen exposure at work, and a lack of cancer screenings to more women are coming forward. talking about being turned away from emergency rooms in texas while pregnant and in distress, kylie thurmond says she began bleeding and sought medical treatment at a hospital in round rock, texas. the 25 year old says she was given a pamphlet on miscarriage and told to, quote, let nature take its course. when she returned three days later, still
