An asterisk (*) marks causes designatd by the NCHS as rank-able in choosing leading causes of death. Frequencies is one way of displaying results. Using rates enables one to remove the bias that comes from comparing frequencies from counties or areas of different population. If you plan to compare areas or time periods, then rates or age-adjusted rates should be used. Age-adjusted rates removes the bias of different age-makeups of geographic areas or time periods.
