Thanks for sharing, Deborah Pendergast, BA, EFO, FSEDI, AEMT! Excerpt from the article:"It’s time we stopped thinking about firefighter wellness as a firefighter issue. Yes, every firefighter must take responsibility for their well-being and work to reduce physical and mental health risks. But departments that fail to engage the family in firefighter wellness are missing a powerful tool. Spouses and other family members play a huge role in helping our firefighters stay resilient, prioritize their physical and mental wellness, and stay focused on the job – factors every fire service leader should care about."

We--the fire service--are losing mental health clinicians who know and understand what firefighters do, why they do it, how they do it, and the unique stressors of the job. Why? Because of differences in expectation when it comes to compensation. I encourage you to read my article to get a clearer picture of the problem along with some proposed solutions.Fire Service Psychology Association- Admin

As we prepare for another Safety Stand Down in the fire service, I found myself asking myself "Self, is this year's Safety Stand Down really focusing on the basics?" Check out this post on my blog, Talking "Shop" 4 Fire and EMS to see what Self said.

Best wishes for success for this amazing group of fire service professionals! "Shout out" to one of West Virginia's own, Chris Collins, Lieutenant and Fire Marshal with the St. Albans Fire Department. Chris does an awesome job "pushing" the fire and life safety message to his community!

Attention all mental health clinicians out there in the "Avsec Nation" who work with firefighters or who want to! You don't want to miss out on this--what should be amazing interaction--between the founder and CEO of the Fire Service Psychology Association- Admin, Dr. Kristin Wheldon, and one of our newest--and highly energetic and engaged--members of FSPA, Sarah Parks, a LCSW with the Oklahoma City Fire Department.

And it must be shared because TOO MANY firefighters and officers continue to NOT WEAR THEIR SEATBELTS whenever the fire apparatus is moving!

At FSPA, we’re delighted to partner with the Washington, D.C., Fire & EMS Department, and the DC Fire & EMS Foundation to present our 7th Annual FSPA conference in our Nation’s Capital, October 3 & 4, 2024. So, get out your calendar and start making plans to attend the first, and still the only, conference dedicated to “bridging the gap between professional psychology and the fire service.” No other conference brings fire service leaders, psychologists, masters-level clinicians, and peer support team members together to network, share information, and hear presentations on the latest research and best practices that are helping to develop a field of fire service psychology–a field that currently does not exist–that’s recognized by the American Psychology Association (APA), just as there is for law enforcement and our military services.Go to the FSPA Conference Page, https://lnkd.in/e9VbTWRG, for Conference Registration, Hotel Reservations, List of Presentations...with more to come!Fire Service Psychology Association- Admin
