8 June is #WorldOceansDay 🌊 - a day dedicated to emphasizing the crucial role our oceans play in the global ecosystem. As we face the realities of climate change and rising sea levels, protecting our coastal areas becomes increasingly important.🌍 The #METAscales research project (coordinated by Dr.-Ing. C. Gabriel David) is looking at how coastal communities can protect themselves in the long term against natural hazards and extreme events. The scientists of the Leichtweiß-Institut für Wasserbau at #TUBraunschweig are working on innovative solutions that integrate both technical and socio-economic aspects into coastal planning, protection, and risk management. Next expedition for Dr. Marta Pérez Rodriguez, PhD on board of the #Polarstern! 🚢Today the scientist from the Institute of Geoecology (Department of Environmental Geochemistry) at #TUBraunschweig will leave from Bremerhaven for another expedition with the Alfred-Wegener-Institut, Helmholtz-Zentrum für Polar- und Meeresforschung. The Polarstern will head for Molloy Deep, the deepest region of the Arctic. ❄️🔬🧪🌊 During this expedition, Marta Pérez Rodriguez will be involved in experiments on the degradation of phytoplankton particles in the water column and their role in the mercury cycle, as well as to collecting sediments from this Arctic region. She expects to arrive at the sampling area near the Fram Strait in six days. Biology student Ronja Friedhoff shows how students can conduct successful research during their studies. The student at #TUBraunschweig has decoded genetic information from various medicinal plants. In mid-May, she was able to present her findings to a broad specialist audience at the international London Calling 2024 conference. 👩🏫 🌿 Using nanopores in an artificial membrane, Ronja Friedhoff examined millions of individual DNA molecules in high-throughput. This has already enabled the genomes of various pharmaceutically interesting plants such as stinging nettle, foxglove and sleeping berry to be opened up. The aim is to understand the biosynthetic pathways of plant-based active ingredients so that active ingredients can be produced using nature as a model and used in therapies. "The technological progress in the field of sequencing is truly impressive. 🏆🪐 Johanna Bürger has been awarded the Zonta International Amelia Earhart Fellowship!Johanna Bürger is a PhD student and research assistant at the Institute of Geophysics and Extraterrestrial Physics at #TUBraunschweig. The $10,000 fellowship is awarded annually to up to 30 doctoral students in the fields of aerospace engineering and space science at an international level. The #AmeliaEarhartFellowship was established in 1938 in honour of the famous aviator Amelia Earhart. 🌕 Johanna Bürger's research focuses on characterising the lunar regolith, a fine-grained material that covers the surface of the Moon. The model she has developed will make it possible to predict the grain size and layering of lunar regolith on a global scale. #TUBraunschweig discovers important steps in biosynthesis🌿 St. John's wort is one of the best known medicinal plants. Extracts of the plant are used to treat mild to moderate depression. Although the complex constituents of St. John's wort have promising medicinal properties, they are difficult to isolate and synthesise. To facilitate their extraction, the biosynthesis of St. John's wort can be transferred to #microorganisms. Microorganisms are relatively easy to grow in bioreactors as cell factories. However, in order to reproduce plant biosynthesis in microorganisms, it is necessary to know the steps of the biosynthetic pathway. Scientists at the Institute of Pharmaceutical Biology have now made a #breakthrough. The new findings have been published in the prestigious journal "Nature Communications". Can you train happiness? 🍀 Yes, you can! And the earlier the better, says Tobias Rahm. That's why the happiness researcher from the Institute of Educational Psychology of #TUBraunschweig, together with the author Carina Mathes, launched the project "Happiness Skills in Primary Schools" (GlüGS project). More than 500 children at primary schools in Braunschweig have taken part in the happiness lessons. Greetings from the Environment Week in Berlin! 🌍🌿On 4 and 5 June the Federal President and the DBU Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt (DBU) are hosting the Environment Week in the park of Schloss Bellevue. #TUBraunschweig is also represented, for example by the Institute of Sanitary and Environmental Engineering (Prof. Thomas Dockhorn) with two projects at two stands:🥬💧 In the HypoWave+ project, funded by the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung, researchers have developed a concept for vegetable production with treated wastewater in #hydroponic systems. It is currently being put into practice on a large scale for the first time. 🌱♻️ The Precoat Filter project is testing a technology that can remove dissolved trace substances and very fine particles, such as microplastics, from the effluent of municipal #wastewater treatment plants to a greater extent than is currently possible.
